Oxford, Mississippi — The Oxford School District is delighted to highlight the success of an innovative educational initiative designed to support English Learner (EL) students by offering a world-history class taught in Spanish at Oxford High School.

Led by Tuesday Arizaga, an English Learners and Spanish teacher at Oxford High School, this immersive course provides a supportive and engaging learning environment, particularly for EL students who are new to Oxford.

Although the instruction is in Spanish, students in the course follow the same content and assessments as the other world history classes at Oxford High School. The course allows the English Learner students to actively participate in discussions, engage with lessons, and strengthen their academic foundation for future courses.

“We decided to create this class to give them another credit option that would allow them to be in a comfortable environment that is instructed in their native language, while learning important content. It builds a foundation and skills needed for success in other classes they will take later on, such as US History,” Mrs. Arizaga said. “I have really enjoyed teaching this class this year and helping out our English Learner population in another way.”

“In Ms. Arizaga's classroom, students don’t just learn English and World History—they gain confidence, find their voices, and realize their potential. She goes above and beyond to make sure every student feels seen, supported, and capable of success. The impact she’s making reaches far beyond the classroom, shaping futures and opening doors. I’m incredibly grateful to have such a dedicated and passionate teacher on our team,” said Nancy McCurdy, Oxford School District English Learner’s Program Coordinator.

Oxford School District is so grateful for Mrs. Arizaga and all of our dedicated EL teachers, whose passion and commitment make a lasting impact on our students’ lives.
